There's been some talk that the Yankees are interested in bringing back pitcher David Wells, now 45, for a third stint with the team.
The Daily News reported today that there's a fat chance -- pardon the pun -- that the rotund Wells will return.
I say, why not take a flyer? Given the state of Yankee starting pitching at the moment -- Phil Hughes awful and injured; Ian Kennedy awful and back in the minors; Kei Igawa awful and, well,. just awful; and Andy Pettitte and Mike Mussina somewhat inconsistent -- the team should take a chance. Couldn't hurt.
I've always loved Wells, mostly because he loves being a Yankee. He thrives in the spotlight of New York where many fail. Sure, he's probably beyond his best years, but for now he could be a nice stopgap in the starting rotation until Hughes returns from injury and Kennedy learns how to pitch in New York City and not Scranton-Wilkes Barre.
